Vegan cheese
Vegan cheese, or a substitute for cheese, suitable for vegans, may be the most illusive product to find. Many people, who want to become vegans, simply can’t do it because of the cheese issue. There are many alternative cheese products on the market these days. Some are pretty good and some are just awful.
The alternative products for vegan cheese are made from brown rice, tofu and soy protein. In order to get the cheese-like texture required for these alternatives, it is necessary to add cornstarch, agar agar or tapioca.
Vegans and vegetarians alike must be very careful in reading the ingredients of any cheese-like product they buy. There are several brands that are labeled “suitable for vegans” but when you read the ingredients list, you may find that casein has been added.
Vegan cheese cannot have casein.
Casein comes from cow’s milk. When it is added to the vegan cheese alternatives, it makes the “fake” cheese more like “real” cheese in that it melts better and you get the stringy texture that makes pizza so great!
None of the vegan cheese products I’ve found can be considered as inexpensive. This is definitely a problem when the only way a person can decide which product tastes the best, is to try each one. If you are lucky, the market in your area selling vegan foods will have a day devoted to serving samples of those products and you can taste them for free.
