Freebie of the Month: Almonds!

The Almond Board of California is sponsoring the benefits of almonds by
providing free samples! First come-first served!!!

Truth -- we are serious now, folks. You can go to www.AlmondsAreIn.com/tin and
answer a few demographic questions. They will send you a cute little container
filled with almonds. It costs you nothing. The container holds 1 ounce of
almonds, about 23, which they suggest should be part of your daily eating
pattern.

Yes, it is excellent marketing, but there are far worse things one eats
everyday. If even ONE salty, fatty snack is eliminated from our diets,
especially those of our children, every day and replaced by 23 almonds, we'd
all be healthier!

Almonds are good snack foods as they give you energy and are cholesterol-free.
However, they are NOT fat free, so you must cut fat from your daily diet
elsewhere. A quarter cup (34.5 grams) is 205 calories, but brings with it 45%
of your daily manganese and vitamin E requirements along with lesser amounts
of magnesium, tryptophan, copper, vitamin B2 and phosphorus.
But even the fat is a 'good fat'. Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats,
like that found in olive oil, long known to lower cholesterol. Additionally,
significant studies are finding that substituting nuts for other carbs reduces
the risk for heart disease by as much as 35%.

Besides the good-for-you fat, almonds have protein and fiber as well. You
could do yourself and your family a good turn by adding almonds as a daily
snack.
