Popsicles

What's more 'summery' than popsicles? Ice Cold Watermelon! So how about
combining the two and making Watermelon Popsicles!

The first popsicle was first called an Epsicle -- one of those accidents that make history. Eleven year old Frank Epperson left a powdered fruity drink outside over one 1905 winter's night with the mixing stick in it and found it the next day. It was GREAT! And he made them for his friends and then later for his kids. He changed the name to Popsicle when he heard the kids yelling for "Pop's Icicles".

It took 18 years for Frank to apply for a patent for his 'frozen ice on a stick'. He got it and then it was only 2 years later that he sold it to the Joe Lowe Company of New York. That patent is now owned by Good Humor ... but we digress!

You can easily make a slurry of fresh watermelon and simply stick any flat stick in it and put it in the freezer. Or, you can get one of those popsicle kits that provide twin-pop plastic forms and sticks and go whole hog for the professional look.

The original sticks were made of ash. But that was just because it was a
"tasteless" wood and easily available. The most impermeable wood we have
readily available is bamboo -- found at stores in Asian communities. These
are neat because they can be reused! There is very little permeability in Bamboo,
so you can wash the sticks in the dishwasher and use them repeatedly!

Just make a slurry of some of your fresh sweet summer watermelons and put them in the ice cube tray or form with a stick of choice in them and enjoy!

You can also use almost any fruit with soda added to get some variety in the
tasty treats and sneak in some vitamins, too!

Happy summer!
