Vegetarians and the bible diet: wheat
As vegetarians, bread is a major staple. Sheaves of wheat are time-honored symbols of life, prosperity and food. Bread, made from wheat, is a symbol of life in many folk traditions and sacred ceremonies. For thousands of years, bread has been the Staff of Life for mankind. A bountiful wheat harvest meant there would be enough bread to keep a colony alive through the winter months.
“Breaking bread” is a traditional way to bring friends, enemies and people of other cultures together by sharing food. Sharing bread (food) is a way to create and sustain bonds of friendship. The sharing of bread is of most holy significance in some religions.
Now, in the twenty first century, bread, that life-sustaining food, has become a soft gluey concoction with almost no nutritional value. As one writer expressed it: “The staff of life is broken.” The wheat that used to sustain life has been stripped of all of its nutritional value and the bread and other foods made from wheat are detrimental to our health.
Most of us simply don’t have the time to bake bread. That’s why we buy the over-processed and nutrient deficient loaves that are mass-produced by the bread corporations.
In the United States, bleached white flour from which breads, rolls, cookies, noodles and pasta are made, have been stripped of about forty percent of the nutrients naturally present in wheat. The nutrients that have been removed are the ones most important to our health. Lost are the bran and wheat germ. At least half the Vitamin B, calcium, trace minerals and fiber have been removed. The United States has enacted laws requiring companies to enrich processed wheat flour with additions of B vitamins and iron. The additions do not come close to replacing the nutrients that were there by nature.
Fortunately, in almost all towns and cities, there are small bakeries that do grind their wheat and don’t bleach the flour. They can’t stone-grind the wheat, but have invested in machines that don’t cause heat damage and therefore, do not destroy the nutrients. This is where you find true whole wheat products and you are encouraged to do so.
The flour from whole wheat naturally contains vitamins B1, B2, B3, E, folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, manganese, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc. Whole wheat products are an excellent source of dietary fiber. Add to that list of amazing natural healthy ingredients the fact that whole wheat products taste great.
