When I first saw the words Alpine pepper and Mountain pepper, I decided I had to know what "Alpine" and "Mountain" had to do with pepper. If it was edible, it must be something special.
Mountain Pepper (Tasmannia lanceolata) is a small shrub growing in the region of the Tasmanian rain forest. The caterpillars of the Macleay's Swallowtail butterfly feed upon the leaves of the Mountain Pepper.
The Aborigines of Australia used the berries and leaves of the Mountain Pepper shrub to add spice and flavor to their food and also used it for medicinal purposes
Now commercialized, Mountain Pepper is only one of the marvelous Australian spices that can be enjoyed by people all over the world. It is similar to the white pepper that we are familiar with, but has more of a zing.
Alpine Pepper is the creation of Aussie, Vic Cherikoff. His Alpine Pepper is a blend of Mountain Pepper and other native herbs and spices. It is simply delicious and can be used just as you would use any ordinary pepper. But the incredible taste it adds to any dish is certainly out of the ordinary!
Chef Cherikoff describes his Alpine Pepper as "an aromatic pepper mix with a slow burn to ignite your tastebuds." (And it does!)
Alpine Pepper is definitely a gourmet item that will delight you, your friends and family.
Chef Cherikoff recommends it for use in soups, on vegetables or incorporated as an herb mix in your homemade bread. As a vegetarian, I am always looking for different ways to season food. And Alpine Pepper is a marvelous addition to the spice rack.
