Anchovies in your Worcestershire Sauce!
Just one of those defining "You're kidding!" moments that occasionally happens.

This moment happened during a clean out of my spice cabinet, compliments of my Mom, who is reining back on what she needs in hers!  I had discovered I now had multiple bottles of things like Kitchen Magic and three different types of cooking sherry. I can't remember the last time I grabbed the cooking sherry! Oh, well. I guess I'll be looking up recipes on the internet with that particular ingredient.

Anyway, I was reading ingredients on what the items I was inheiriting from Mom and just gave a gander to my Worcestershire Sauce. Lo and behold, one of the lower down the list ingredients was anchovies!

Anchovies?

I went to the Lea & Perrins website for a detailed list of what the ingredients are and found out that that's a closely held secret. They have to list, by FDA regulation, the higher percentaged ingredients  -- so we can figure that anchovies are a larger percentage of the total 'proprietary ingredient list' than we may like to acknowledge.

So what does that matter, you ask?

Well, although Worcestershire Sauce (which may be properly pronounced : "wust-ter-shire, "woos-ter-sheer", or "woos-ter-sher" sauce) is usually associated with making a wonderfully tasteful burger, it is also used to create a very tasty Bloody Mary. And while we do not condone alcoholic stupors, there are some benefits currently attributable to moderate alcohol use. After all, a recent study stated that those who do not consume ANY alcohol have a higher incidence of stroke and heart attacks!

The upshot? Just know that you must read labels of even the most common of items to be fully informed about what you are consuming.
