Jam-packed with anthocyanins and polyphenols, blackberries are top-of-the-line
for your health.
In a recent listing of the top 50 foods ranked for antioxidant properties
which protect from heart disease, diabetes, cancer and a host of illnesses
that abound in the winter, blackberries ranked #1. At a serving size of one
cup a day, you will do better by your body if you include these luscious
berries than, dare we say, even the 'apple a day' maxim suggests!
But don't just eat blackberries alone. Studies show that a mix of dark
berries, which includes blueberries and cranberries, does BETTER than just any
one berry by itself! You can add quality years to your life if you broaden
your palate's spectrum.
To do this, choose from the remainder of those that complete the top ten
antioxidant/serving foods: walnuts, strawberries, artichokes, cranberries,
coffee, raspberries, pecans, blueberries, grape juice and unsweetened baking
chocolate. There is no reason for any of us to NOT eat healthily when provided
such a wondrous list of topnotch taste treats.
Just for a tidbit of non-nutritious info -- do you know how to tell the
difference between a black raspberry and a blackberry? A black raspberry -- in
fact, ALL raspberries -- have a hollow center, while the blackberry has a
greenish-white core!
This is not to say that blackberries contain more antioxidants than anything
else. Herbs and spices actually top the list of foods ranked highest in
antioxidants -- BUT -- you'll not easily eat a cup of cloves, now, will you?
For your edification, the list of these fine edibles includes, from highest to
lowest: the aforementioned cloves, oregano, ginger, cinnamon and turmeric.
So feast away and keep the doctor at bay!
And get a flu shot as SOON as it hits your pharmacy -- there is not a
shortage, per se, of flu serum this year, but there is a distribution problem
which is truly causing some areas of our country to be without.
Good luck and good health!
