Compost Tumbler
A compost tumbler is a very handy tool for the gardener. Most people with flower gardens and vegetable gardens are very aware of the benefits of composting. Compost is organic matter that has decomposed and become humus. Compost can improve soil, such as clay, and is a superb mulching material for your vegetables and flowers.

Finding a compost tumbler is not difficult as many garden supply stores now keep them in stock. Your job is to decide just which compost tumbler is right for you and your yard.

The main source of compost material, for most people, will be grass clippings in the spring and summer months and leaves in the fall. Kitchen scraps, such as fruit and vegetable parings, coffee grounds, tea bags, tea leaves and eggshells are good for composting, as is shredded newspaper. (No glossy magazine material should be used). It is important to know that greasy food scraps, meat scraps, and fat should never be put in the compost tumbler.

Grease, fat and meat scraps do not decompose rapidly and the odor has the potential of attracting rats, mice, dogs and other animals. This kind of matter also takes a very long time to decompose. So it is best to use only recommended materials in the backyard compost tumbler.

A compost tumbler is a fast way to get your compost "cooked". The tumbler will need to be turned several times a week in order to keep the decomposing materials well mixed and aerated.

The compost may be ready in just a few weeks as opposed to several months for the bin methods.

A large compost tumbler is recommended to get hot composting. These larger ones should be filled and then allowed to "cook". It is not a good idea to add more material during the "cooking" process. If you have large amounts of organic matter, you will need a collection area to keep it in while it waits for its turn in the tumble
