Minnesota Dental Association says:
Sip All Day, Get Decay

A pamphlet came across my desk care of my Mom, who is an avid info geek dear to my heart. It tells about how bad soft drinks are for our bodies, especially our teeth.

Vegetarians are not concerned about soft drinks from the veggie angle, but you might be interested in the facts about just how bad the acids and sugars are for you anyway!

The process goes: sugar in the soft drink turns to acid when combined with your mouth bacteria. The acid attacks your tooth enamel and lasts 20 minutes. Sugar-free drinks contain their own acid. Every sip begins another 20 minute attack.

Our bottles are getting larger. In the 1950's, a soda pop was about 6.5 ounces (and cost a nickel!). Today, we have ginormous Big Gulps and 20 ounce bottles, with 12 ounce being normal and 6.5 ounce bottles rare.  A Big Gulp has the equivalent of 5 cans of soda in it!

A few suggestions to minimize damage:
- Rinse your mouth with water to dilute the acid between sips (not very likely)
- Drink with a straw, which minimizes contact with your teeth (good idea)
- Minimize the quantities of soda you drink each day (hmmm)
- And of course, drink water instead of soda.

Well, we know that won't happen -- water is so tasteless!  But, if you do wish a bit of taste, try a light poof of Stevia and a fresh slice of lime or lemon.  Yes, the citrus is an acid, but it is so minimal and it is well diluted by the water.  Besides, you're getting some Vitamin C, painlessly!

The brochure provided a listing of how much acid and sugar was in many of the current soft drinks.  IF you would like the full list, email us.  Or you can write to the Minnesota Dental Association for their brochure or go to www.mndental.org

The worst sugar offenders are: Minute Maid Grape Soda and Orange Slice (tied at 11.9 teaspons per 12 ounce serving). The least harmful sugar offenders are Gatorade (3.3 tsp) and Nestea (5.0 tsp) and Sprite (9.0 tsp).

The least harmful pure soda is Barq's with the lowest acid level, but still having 10.7 teaspoons of sugar in a 12 ounce serving.  The next four in line are: Diet Barq's, Diet 7Up, Sprite and Diet Dr. Pepper.

The worst five (going less worst to most worst !! ) are: Squirt, Hawaiian Fruit Punch, Orange Minute Maid Soda, Coke Classic, and Pepsi.  Pepsi is only a 1.49 units away from battery acid!  So the old saw about cleaning your battery terminals with Coke should really be ... clean them with Pepsi!
