Yes, I am serious. I've tried flax oil pills. They go icky even if they're stored in the refrigerator.
I've tried grinding my own flaxseeds and sprinkling them on cereals or making cookies or crackers out of them. Lots of work and you have to eat a bunch before you get the benefits.
So, I buy ground flaxseed meal and put 2 tablespoons in a cup with about 1/4 cup of coffee and milk. Stir it up and chug a mouthful; stir some more -- maybe add more milk or coffee -- drink some more until it is consumed.
Why 'torture' yourself? Well, flaxseed is marvelous stuff. It has Omega 3 fats, plant-based fatty acids important in keeping bad (LDL) cholesterol low. It also is high in lignins, a phytoestrogen often associated with inhibiting the onset of cancers, especially breast cancer. It has also shown to be able to heal the inner lining of inflamed intestines associated with colitis, probably because of its high fiber content.
That's the research. My experience is with skin eruptions. I think it was probably a precursor to skin cancer -- little plates of skin built up in one small patch on my forehead and didn't respond to anything I applied. I gave up and figured I'd ask my doctor the next time I had an appointment. Shortly after that decision, I started using flax meal and in about 3 weeks I realized the patch of skin had reduced to a mere pinpoint! Almost gone -- not yet, but nearly so!
The only thing different in my diet was flaxseed meal. And so we have an inexpensive aid to health. A vegetarian can't get the Omega 3 that from salmon, which is one usual recommended source, but flaxseed is easily found at your health food store. You don't have to drink it, but somehow, get it down. It will be well worth the effort.
Just as an aside, flaxseeds are the same seeds you put in your bird feeder for wrens and chickadees! It gives them energy and shiny feathers -- maybe it will do the same for you!
