Growing blueberries in your home garden is not difficult to do. The main thing is to find out, through your local garden center, nursery or Agricultural Extension Office, what cultivars will grow in your area. And choose at least two different varieties so you get good pollination and hence, the best fruit.
When growing blueberries, you will need to have the right soil for the blueberry bushes to thrive. Blueberries require a rich acid soil and a cool moist climate. They also require a cold period during the winter, but cannot tolerate extremely cold climates.
Growing blueberries need to be planted in a sunny, well-drained location in soil that has been amended with peat moss, oak leaves, pine needles and well-rotted compost that contains no lime. The optimum soil pH for growing blueberries is 4.8 to 5.2. It would be advisable to conduct a soil pH test, before planting, to see if your garden soil is satisfactory.
Also important to remember is that growing blueberries cannot tolerate standing water. Standing water will damage the roots of the blueberry bush. But the blueberry bushes will need to be well watered. So, if your soil pH is correct, the growing site sunny and well drained, you have a good watering system, come spring, you will be ready to start growing blueberries.
Now that you are ready to start growing blueberries, it's time to get your blueberry bushes. Always choose plants that are at least 2 years old; 3 year old plants are better since blueberries should not be allowed to begin bearing fruit until they are 3 years old.
Be sure to keep your growing blueberries well mulched. Because they are so shallow-rooted, heat can put a lot of stress on the bushes.
Now you have done everything right and those luscious clusters of berries are just waiting to be put on cereal, or in pies or muffins. There is just one more little problem to solve. When growing blueberries, you might want to invest in some netting to put over the bushes. The birds will go wild over blueberries and if you don't feel like sharing, the netting is a good way to protect the fruit.
