Horses Make the Perfect Vegetarian's Pet
You'll notice from the title that we are not claiming that horses are vegetarians. While it is true that they eat only plant material, they have no choice in the matter. They are correctly classified as herbivores. Cattle and sheep are also herbivores, although they do not make the list of preferred pets. The teeth of a herbivore are flat and useful for grinding plant material. Horses, and by extension all herbivores, do not have canine teeth, which is a good thing; just ask anyone who has ever been bitten by a horse!

However, for a vegetarian -- which is a human lifestyle choice -- horses are the perfect pet. The only problem is that they require everything large: a large bed, a large volume of plant material to eat, large quantities of water to drink, a large play area and a large garbage can for their waste.

If your home is in a city or town, you might have some difficulty trying to justify a pet horse under your government's bylaws. Do check first! It is very difficult to keep a horse in your home, I'd imagine. If you know of someone raising a horse in a home in the city, do let us know!

The proper diet for a horse depends on its age. The requirements for a foal from 2 to 12 months of age differ from that of an adult horse. The foal will eat an oat and grain mix, but also needs a nutritional supplement.. Providing a 40% protein and 15% fat supplement along with vitamins, especially vitamin D, E and selenium, assures healthy growth to adulthood.

The older the horse, the more you will need to add oats, hay and grains in the proper proportion to a feed ration made with good biotin, amino acids and fat. This will keep their hooves, bones, coats and immune systems healthy.

Like children, foals need room to run and jump. As fully grown horses, when they may no longer want to frolic and would prefer to laze about, you will need to exercise them every single day.

The proper feeding and care, including medical care, of a horse is no inexpensive matter. Be absolutely sure that you can continue to properly care for your horse through good times and bad. The news stories abound of neglected horses during tough economic times. Animal cruelty should be one of the cardinal sins, in our book, ranking just below what humans do to other humans.

Horses are elegant and regal animals. They have served man in many ways throughout history, bearing his burdens, coming to his rescue and providing companionship. In the United States, there are now more horses than there were when there were no automobiles!

We are pleased to include this exquisite animal on the pet part of our site as a vegetarian's delight.
