Prunes for Bone Strength?
And Better than any Anti-wrinkle Cream!
Truth. The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and the Oklahoma State University have finished a combined study of prunes and osteoporosis. To quote from their paper in the Journal of Women's Health & Gender-Based Medicine "Dried Plums Improve Indices of Bone Formation in Postmenopausal Women":
"Our recent findings suggest that dried plums, a rich source of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, are highly effective in modulating bone mass in an ovarian hormone-deficient rat model of osteoporosis."
True, we're not rats, but in view of what other good stuff comes from eating prunes, it may be a worthwhile addition to our diets.
Further, tests done at Texas A&M University and Kansas State University show the importance of prune extract: from preservation of meats from freezer burn (beyond our interest zone) to the supply of potassium, vitamins C and K, iron and as an antioxidant for our bodies. The antioxidant content doubles as plums are dehydrated and become prunes!
"Four prunes a day is as good as any expensive anti-wrinkle cream!" That is a direct quote from Sowden Bros. Organic Mornin' Glory Products, who claim their organic prune paste is a "miracle in a jar"! They are purveyors of organic prunes and prune products.
Now, even given that there is a certain amount of hype from a company point of view, prunes have been known for centuries to be good for you -- and not just as a laxative!
The website vegetariantimes.com gives a recipe for really chewey brownies, claiming that the reason for the marvelous chewieness is the substitution of prune baby food for half the margarine! Read it here:
