There was a recent article in the Septembere-October 2008 issue of Neurology.
Now that strongly recommends washing all fruits and vegetables.
Nothing new, you say?
Well, you might be surprised how many people believe the label of a bag of
organic veggies that claims it is 'triple washed'! Their advice is Don't !
Believe them, that is. Wash them again, thoroughly.
And if they are not organically grown, wash them extra thoroughly.
The article is titled, "New Study Links Parkinson's and Pesticides". There is
good evidence that draws a straight-line corollary between pesticide residue
ingestion and the development of the tremors of Parkinson's. In fact, a
direct quote is found on page 9: "Increasing levels of exposure to pesticides
were associated with an increasing risk of Parkinson's."
Scary, no?
And so we have these advisories: aluminum in the brain increases the chances
of Alzheimer's; living on filled-in swamps in cold climes increases the risk
of multiple sclerosis; and now, pesticide ingestion can lead to Parkinson's
tremors.
There is nothing too difficult about washing your produce. Your Mom probably
told you to do that right along with washing your hands before coming to the
table, right? Just know that she was right, again, and give her a mental
smile and nod of thanks.
