Fruit centerpieces

You can use any clear or glass crystal dish or bowl to make lovely fruit centerpieces. Fruit centerpieces are nice decorations, besides which, the contents are edible.

You really don't need instructions to make fruit centerpieces, because all you do is decide on the decor with which you want it to go. If you want an autumn theme, you choose autumn fruits. There is also nothing wrong with mixing vegetables with fruit. For an autumn bowl, arrange your fruits around a nicely colored gourd or squash. There are many varieties out there and many of them can be eaten, like acorn squash.

The color scheme comes into play only if you must match the area. Contrasting fruits to your decor also brings spontaneity to your home. The only decision may be whether you wash the fruit first before assembling your fruit centerpiece. Although fruits keep better if they are stored unwashed, it is a good idea to encourage your family and guests to eat from the fruit centerpieces. If you don't eat the fruit, it will go bad -- and that ain't good!

When you get a chance, go to your local craft store and browse through their silk and plastic flowers. Things have really come of age in recent years. Heretofore, you could tell at a glance if a plant, flower or leaf was not real. These days, maybe it's just me, but I get fooled constantly! The addition of a strategic leaf or sprig of flowers can really liven up fruit centerpieces.

Be sure to check out a nice doily or place mat to put under your fruit centerpieces. This will eliminate the chance of juggled fruit falling onto your furniture and eating away the finish! (No, the fruit is not eating the finish, silly. The fruit's juicy acids are eating the finish!) OK. Now, we all know that the best piece of fruit is like the green grass across the fence. It's always the piece of fruit below the topmost available piece that you want and accidents do happen.

Besides being safe, a nice place mat for underneath your fruit centerpieces makes a really easy way to set the tone for the centerpiece. A Christmas placement and a whole fruit centerpiece bowlful of strawberries can hold a bowl of powdered sugar for dipping purposes. The combinations and possibilities are endless. There are no rules. Just be creative and enjoy the effort. Anything you don't like can be eaten, anyway, so why worry?
