Fruit and vegetable pictures
There are more uses for fruit and vegetable pictures than you would think. Of course, there are some wacky fruit and vegetable pictures that are intended just to make you smile, others that teach, and yet others to inform.
Wacky and fun fruit and vegetable pictures are the topic of several creators who make models of a vegetable, say a pickle, and then decorate it. For those of us who have some age behind us, we remember the original Mr. Potato Head that came out in 1952. For those who don't recall--or don't care to!--the original 'toy' consisted of plastic pieces: ears, eyes, eyebrows, bow ties, buttons, etc., which could be stuck into a real potato in various ways. Later versions used a plastic potato body with holes in various places for the parts to be creatively inserted.
Well now we go one step further, alter the targeted age group to 'adult' and broaden the fruit and vegetable pictures categories. It seems that just like there are people who prefer certain pets over others, there are people who have favorite fruits and vegetables! So we go for funny art prints by Freymann & Elffers on their funnytummy site. They persona-fy fruits and vegetables on note cards. They may not be Grand Masters, but they make your brain smile, even if you won't let it reach your face.
In the teaching category are the large pages of fruit and vegetable pictures suitable for kids to color. It teaches them to associate a picture with a word and hopefully, a parent or helpful adult will suggest the correct color so the apple is not orange and the green pepper is not pink. However, these days you get genetically engineered everything, so all bets are off the table! The best site for downloadable coloring book fruit and vegetable pictures we've found is here: http://familycrafts.about.com/od/foodcoloring.
In the arena of prints, fruit and vegetable pictures are needed in grocery stores, chef's markets and, interestingly enough, for corporate offices' decoration. Just like Georgia O'Keefe did with flowers, others have done really large fruit and vegetable pictures in absolutely gorgeous frames for walls around the world. Some are painted; some are large, stunning close-up photographs. Take a look at this solar flare (actually it's a kiwi fruit!): http://www.silvervisions.com/Media_Pages/wled106.htm
And then the supreme creation among fruit and vegetable pictures is the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. The original structure--built in 1892; the current one in 1921--is the same, but every external inch of the massive building is decorated anew each and every year. The murals are designed created by local graphic artists and depict life in South Dakota. Thousands of bushels of corn, grain, grasses, wild oats, brome grass, blue grass, rye, straw and wheat are applied to the building like a gigantic paint-by-numbers board. It is open from May through Labor Day with the official Corn Palace Festival held on Labor Day weekend.
