Watermelon carving
This is the time of year for all the luscious melons to come on the market. I find them irresistible and usually buy far too many to be able to consume before they spoil. I was staring at a watermelon that needed to be eaten, when it suddenly occurred to me that I should try watermelon carving.
Now I have mutilated quite a few pumpkins over the years, but watermelon carving opened a whole new vista of ideas to try. I even decided to plan a party for my friends and have as the table centerpiece, my very own watermelon carving! But I thought I had better practice this art before inviting anyone over.
I prudently set up a table in the garage to work on my watermelon carving. Just in case you don't know, watermelons are very juicy and working with them can be very messy! Or maybe that's just me. I seem to be a natural mess-maker.
Okay, now I was set. I had a watermelon, a knife, my pumpkin carving kit from last year and a large bowl in which to put the edible part of the melon. My career in watermelon carving was ready to begin.
Okay, maybe I wasn't quite as set as I had thought. I had everything I needed for watermelon carving except for an idea of what I would make. A watermelon jack-o-lantern probably wasn't going to look too good.
After great deliberation, I cut the melon in half, length-wise, scooped it out into the bowl and turned the shell upside down on a platter. Hefting my watermelon carving pick, I made row after row of little holes. I then got out the handy melon ball maker, and happily, was able to make about three dozen or so from the reserved pulp.
I then stuck toothpicks into all the little holes and put a chunk of pineapple and a melon ball on each toothpick. My watermelon carving was on its way to becoming a great wooly caterpillar! But now my caterpillar needed eyes.
A Kiwifruit was perfect! I cut two nice round slices and toothpicked them to the widest end of the melon. What a great face on my watermelon carving. I know I really didn't do much watermelon carving, but this was my first try. I will work to create fancier ones and keep you informed. I may even try carving a replica of the Eiffel Tower from my next watermelon!
What happened to my watermelon carving? I called over some of the neighborhood children and let them judge it. They thought it was great. Eating a caterpillar delighted the boys. They said it was "way cool"!
