Compost Bin Plans
Here are some compost bin plans for you to set up in your yard. They are easy to construct and do not have to be a permanent fixture. You can move the bin to other areas when you wish.
All compost bin plans should start with the dimensions necessary to insure proper composting. All bins should be at least one cubic yard in size. This is usually a 4-foot by 3-foot box.
If you have some cinder blocks or bricks, your compost bin plans can use either or both materials. Just select the area you will want your compost bin to be, measure the dimensions on the ground and begin to stack the bricks or the cinder blocks.
The compost bin plans for using bricks or cinder blocks will be for a three-sided structure. The
fourth "side" stays open because that is where you will be standing while you turn the materials that are on their way to decomposition and beautiful, rich organic matter.
There are some reasons for having a way to cover the top of the compost bins you may construct. If you live in a very wet part of the country, you don't want the compost to stay soggy. This will keep the materials from decomposing and cause odors. If your home is located in an arid region, the composting material will dry out. So, for these compost bin plans you will want to have a piece of plastic or a tarp to cover the top and sides to help keep your material biodegrading.
Another very simple and effective way to set up a compost bin is to set four wooden pallets on end, creating a square, and secure them to each other with baling wire or strong plastic ties. The compost bin plans for this structure include leaving one edge unsecured, so it can be opened like a door, thus giving you access to the interior.
Again, you may wish to cover the top of your bin with plastic sheeting. Many compost bin plans instruct you to staple plastic sheeting on each side of your wooden pallet bin.
